When your company is constantly evolving, your teams need a clear picture – or story – of what is happening at the organization.
At Certus, which provides technical skills training and compliance solutions to organizations throughout multiple industries, leadership teams like to be aligned on the company’s organizational changes to facilitate future growth. The company initially relied on different spreadsheets, but oftentimes, information got lost in translation.
David Nava, Certus’ Director of Total Rewards and People Operations from 2023-2025, turned to OrgChart for help. Initially, he just wanted to see an accurate picture of his company, but he soon discovered that he could use OrgChart to do so much more, including aligning with finance on budget needs, evaluating employee performance, and collaborating with leadership to plan for the future.
“There is always a story behind your organization and decisions made, and sometimes it is hard to explain the story just using words,” he said. “If I show a visual of the people who moved roles, left roles, etc. that helps a lot – especially since we go over our organizational changes on a monthly basis.”
Certus is a people-first organization, but Nava said it has been incredibly useful to evaluate both people and position data in OrgChart. For example, he can evaluate individual employee performance by color-coding high and low performers in the org chart and, in a different org chart view, he can analyze position budgets vs. employee salaries with the finance team.
“Being able to see position pay ranges and see if employees fell within their pay range was a game changer,” Nava said. “And I like to show finance our headcount and what’s coming down the road in terms of recruitment. Being able to show finance our past, current, and future numbers in a visual format makes it so much clearer.”
Additionally, as an e-learning company, Certus knows the importance of upskilling workers, and as they look to the future, they plan to use OrgChart to help identify which employees can be upskilled to contribute even more toward company growth.
“There are a lot of unknowns right now, but we do know we need to focus on upskilling,” Nava said. “And we are planning in OrgChart with that in mind.”
