Nonprofit Saves Hours with Org Chart Automation

At a small but mighty Chicago-based nonprofit, operations and HR employees wear many hats, so they needed an org chart solution that would not take them any time to update.

At a nonprofit association, every employee needs to be nimble. At a small but mighty Chicago-based nonprofit, operations and HR employees in particular wear many hats, including creating and maintaining the org chart. Since managing the org chart is far from their top priority, the nonprofit’s business coordinator decided they needed a solution that enabled them to quickly and accurately produce org charts.

“OrgChart is just so easy,” said the coordinator. “The automation is amazing. I love that it gives you a headcount at the top of the chart, it shows you how many people are in each department, and it shows you the separation between contractors and fulltime employees.”

From Hours to Seconds, From Obscurity to Strategic Planning

When the nonprofit’s business operations coordinator was first hired and asked to create an org chart, they spent an entire week working in Miro trying to accurately map their organization.

“I was working with a software that was not user friendly, and customer service was not very helpful in creating the org chart,” the coordaintor said. “After that week I told my boss, I’m not getting anywhere with this program, and we found OrgChart. It had everything we needed. It was extremely user friendly, and the team that helped us get our chart formatted was amazing.”

Now, with OrgChart, the coordinator can create an accurate org chart for the nonprofit in seconds by importing data from Paycom and disparate spreadsheets. And, by combining multiple HR data sources into one chart, the nonprofit’s org chart displays a fully comprehensive overview of their organization.

With all the HR information in one place, the executive team and board can more strategically plan for the future. “We often use our org chart to track vacancies,” the coordinator said. “When we are in the process of budgeting for the next fiscal year, it is really important for our executive leadership team to see the roles we have open and where we can bring on new hires to fill important positions.”

Having an accurate org chart also helps all employees get a better understanding and visualization of the nonprofit’s structure so they know who to reach out to for help when projects shift unexpectedly.

“We are constantly evolving as an organization,” said the coordinator. “With OrgChart, it takes me five seconds to add a new colleague or vacancy. And, when we have new hires that come onboard we give them a copy of their department. The majority of our company is remote so we want them to know who the chain of command is and who they can reach out to for help.”
